Book Review

Descent by Tim Johnston
Reviewed by Melanie Green
Just as she is about to start college on a track scholarship, young Caitlin heads to the stunning and stark mountain ranges of Colorado for the last family vacation of her childhood. On a morning run with your younger brother Sean, the unthinkable happens and Caitlin is taken right before Sean’s eyes. Caitlin’s fight for survival is taut and gut-wrenching. The family unravels right before your eyes. The story is intense and heart-pounding. But the writing is so well crafted, every word is precisely right. I found myself stopping to re-read phrases just because they took my breath away. And yet I devoured every word, willing Caitlin to escape, willing her brother to find her before he completely derails, willing her mother to hold out hope just a little longer, willing her father to be the last thread that will hold the family together

Vanessa and Her Sister by Priya Parma
This novel tells the story of sisters Vanessa and Virgina Stephens, later Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf.   Vanessa, an emerging painter, tells their stories in her journal, accompanied by the letters and telegrams of their families, husbands, and the many brilliant artists and painters in their circle. It is a story of art, literature, betrayal, emotional upheaval, and above all the many  complicated forms love takes. Set against the backdrop of Edwardian England, a time of sweeping social transformations, Vanessa and her Sister is a moving portrait of a brilliant family
